Getting Involved

Helping in our Community

Pride of the Borough’s aim is to improve of the environment of our Borough by getting the community involved in many ways. Over the years we have helped by brightening verges and green spaces, planting thousands of bulbs and placing planters in our Town centres to improve residents’ enjoyment of their surroundings. We have run monthly work mornings every third Saturday for many years, but have currently suspended these while we look at better ways to use our resources for this type of activity.

The above photo is of the roundabout at the top of Hill Way in Oadby and is an example of where local residents have got together to look after their surroundings. Pride of the Borough volunteers  have joined in to help when required.

This all takes time and effort,  relying on the goodwill of our members to support us. If you have some time to spare and want to improve your local environment, then we need to hear from you. As now, after many years of support, some of our stalwart helpers have found it necessary to take things a little easier and have had cut back on a lot of tasks they undertook. If new helpers do not come forward to join us then we will have no option but to cut back on what we do !  Perhaps before committing yourself why not come along to one of our committee meetings to meet us and find out what we get up to!

Our meetings take place on the second Monday each month at 7:00pm, see below for venue and details, these are also posted on our Events Calendar page.

We have decided to alternate meetings with a more informal style to include, where possible, a talk from an outside organisation and then the following month to concentrate more on the business side of what we do.

Don’t forget that you can now purchase your PotB Membership and Privilege card  from the Council’s main reception desk in  The Brocks Hill Centre.

We will keep you informed of future changes on this page

The next meeting is on Monday 15 November 2026

Starting at 7:00pm  in the Thythorn Hill Community Centre, Horsewell Lane, Wigston LE18 2HR.

This meeting is a Business  Format.

Tea, Coffee and biscuits will be available.

Its Your Neighbourhood

Pride of the Borough has in the past helped with organising the East Midlands in Bloom competition in conjunction with Oadby & Wigston Borough Council. Sadly in 2025, because of financial restraints,  the Borough council was unable to support the entry. So the volunteers of Pride of the Borough decided to throw their weight into supporting several local entries  in the RHS  It’s Your Neighbourhood  initiative. (IYN for short!) their efforts were viewed by RHS assessors  during the late summer  and certificates duly awarded.

At our usual October meeting Pride of the Borough hosted a Presentation Evening to honour those who had worked so hard to achieve glowing reports from the assessors.

The Leicester Mercury reported on the evening  and O&W Council  noted it on their website that can be viewed on the link below.

It’s Your Neighbourhood

Here is a link to preview the RHS initiative that PotB will be promoting this year more details can be found by going to the EastMidlands in Bloom site mentioned on our Membership page.

Ad Hoc Work Parties

We have  started to use our revised Ad Hoc Work parties to implement the best use of our volunteers and are  liaising with the Borough Council to ensure we are not overlapping their work schedules. The dates for these will be found on our new Calendar of Events

The most  common task in the past has been with group litter picking and we are exploring how best use smaller localised groups arranging their own system. We do have litter picking equipment which we can lend to you but do ask you to bring your own protective gloves.

Of course, it would be good to see some new faces in the New Year as the more helpers we have the greater will be the improvement to our Borough!

Those tasks that involve bulb planting, weeding or cutting/ trimming back shrubs etc. we do ask you to bring your own tools, such as a fork, spade, trowel secateurs, shears etc..

All the ad hoc tasks  are now  arranged with our core of regular volunteers at various times by a ‘consensus system’ instead of fixed dates and venues each month which seems to be working well!

Remember also, that we  provide Tea, Coffee and biscuits at the end of our work sessions.

We are very grateful to Community Action Partnership, who have kindly offered the use of their specially adapted mini-bus and driver for both the East Midlands in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competition judging days.

The Partnership is a not-for-profit charity that offers door-to-door transport through a team of dedicated volunteer drivers. The service is available to anyone who may have difficulty in using public transport within the Oadby & Wigston and Blaby District.

If you are interested in the kind of support they can offer, or maybe considering volunteering, you can contact Community Action Partnership on 0116 2887482.

 Membership Scheme Administration

Joining in with help to promote PotB at the activities we attend to increase our membership, our main source of income. Helping out with letter deliveries in your locality especially at membership card renewal time.

––– Looking after the Town Centre Planters

We have a co-ordinator who would love to have help with replenishing spent compost and replanting,  keeping an eye out for weeds and reporting lack of water.

Helping to look after various green areas around the Borough

There could be an area near you that is already being looked after by nearby residents who would welcome additional help or an area near you that needs some TLC, let us know and we can help you with setting it up.

Ad Hoc Work Days

As you will have already noticed we have moved away from our regular Saturday work mornings. The decision to go for an Ad hoc approach has proved to be a better use for our volunteer workforce. By co-ordinating our volunteer availability we have been able to achieve so much more,
